Accelerating the circular bioeconomy: innovation for sustainable rural development

11 June @ 9:30 am - 12:20 pm

The transition to a circular and competitive bioeconomy is a key driver of sustainable rural development across Europe. This EU Green Week 2025 partner event, organised by the Rural Bioeconomy Alliance (RBA), an informal cluster of EU-funded projects linked by a shared commitment to fostering innovation in rural bioeconomy, will present cutting-edge solutions, best practices, and policy recommendations aimed at accelerating the shift towards a circular bioeconomy.

The RBA works as a collaborative platform where projects come together to exchange knowledge, align strategies, and amplify impact, strengthening Europe’s capacity to implement bio-based solutions at scale. Bringing together multiple initiatives, the event will explore critical aspects of the bioeconomy transition, from policy frameworks to practical digital tools that support replication and scalability.

It will highlight how targeted policy briefs and recommendations can shape the enabling environment for bioeconomy initiatives, facilitating their adoption across rural regions. The discussion will showcase innovative digital toolkits and replication guides designed to streamline knowledge transfer and implementation, providing rural stakeholders with the resources to develop sustainable, bio-based solutions tailored to regional contexts.

A key focus will be on actionable strategies for stakeholder engagement and knowledge transfer, drawing on insights from successful projects that have fostered participation across multiple sectors. The session will also examine pathways for regional bioeconomy development, presenting methodologies for regionalisation, best practice mapping, and multi-criteria assessment to guide strategic decision-making.

Moreover, the event will introduce pioneering bio-based technologies in agriculture and forestry, with a particular emphasis on solutions that contribute to circular nutrient flows and the efficient use of bioresources.

Designed as an interactive online session, the event will consist of presentations from leading EU projects, followed by a Q&A segment where participants can engage, ask questions, and gain deeper insights into the presented strategies and recommendations. By fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange, this session will contribute to strengthening circular bioeconomy initiatives and enhancing the competitiveness of rural regions through innovation and sustainable resource management.
